Temporary Fence Types for Sites and Events
Temporary fence keeps the public out of a hole, a stack of materials or a street event, and then disappears. The right kind depends on how long it stays, who you're keeping out, and whether people should see in.

Panel Temporary Fence on Stands
Free-standing chain link panels, 6 feet tall and 12 feet long, are the default on building sites. They sit in bases instead of the ground, so nothing is dug, and clamps join each panel to the next. The small parts are priced separately in guides:
- Bases or feet: $5 to $15 each per month
- Sandbags: $5 to $10 each
- Clamps or couplers: $1 to $5 each
On open lots, ask for sandbags on every base. A screened run behaves like a sail in a summer storm.

Driven-Post Construction Fence and Orange Mesh
Where the fence just has to mark a hazard, plastic safety mesh on driven stakes is the low-cost answer, at $15 to $60 for a roll 4 feet tall. Guides call it the cheapest choice and the least secure, so it suits a pool dig or a house under construction better than a site that holds tools overnight. Driven posts also mean the ground gets punched, so ask whether the setup crew calls in a utility locate first (details on Chain Link Fences).

Event and Crowd Fence
Interlocking steel barricades are what you see at parades, races and concerts. They rent for $20 to $60 each per month, and some need separate feet at $5 to $15 apiece. Shorter traffic-control panels, about 4 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet long, carry reflective strips for road work and parking lots. For a ticketed event, screened panels around the perimeter stop people watching from outside.

Temporary Gates
Every site fence needs at least one way in for trucks and one for people. Temporary swing or slide gates run $100 to $500 each in guides, and a padlock adds $20 to $40. Barbed or tension wire along the top, at $50 to $150 per rental, is an option for sites with theft problems where zoning allows it; see Security Fencing for the wire rules.
