Gate Repair Jobs by Problem
Most gate trouble starts at one of three places: the frame, the hardware or the post it hangs on. Driveway gates add a fourth, the opener.

Sagging Wood Gate Repair
A wood gate that drags on the ground or won't reach its latch has usually racked out of square. Heavy wet boards pull the latch corner down. The fix is to square the frame and add a diagonal brace, or a steel cable with a turnbuckle, running up from the bottom latch corner to the top hinge corner. If the boards are soft or split, a new gate frame may cost little more than the repair. Fixr puts gate repairs at $150 to $500 and full replacement at $200 to $850.

Hinge and Latch Replacement
Rusted hinges, loose screws in rotted wood and latches that won't catch are the cheapest gate repairs. HomeGuide lists hinge replacement as a standard repair and gate adjustments as minor work. On chain link, a basic gate repair runs $75 to $150, and the usual culprits are a bent latch, a broken hinge or a frame knocked out of line. If the gate is part of a pool barrier, it has to close and latch by itself, so treat a pool gate that hangs open as urgent. The rules are on Pool Fences.

Gate Opener Repair
An opener that hums but won't move, stops halfway or reverses for no reason has a short list of causes: a dead battery, a weak solar charge, a blocked safety sensor, a stripped gear or a remote that lost its code. Guides put common automatic gate repairs (motor replacement, track adjustment, remote reprogramming) at $200 to $600, though a full opener swap can run far higher. Use the manual release to open the gate while you wait. Ask the repairer to check that the safety sensors still stop and reverse the gate before they leave.

Slide and Cantilever Track Repair
A slide gate that jerks or stalls usually has a problem at ground level: sand in the track, a flattened wheel or a track bent by a car tire. Cantilever gates have no ground track, so their wear shows at the roller carriages on the posts instead. Fixr notes a gate has to slide freely, with no drag, before an opener can run it. Clearing and realigning the track is cheap compared with burning out a motor that has been fighting it.

Gate Post Reset
Sometimes the gate is fine and the post is leaning. A gate post carries the whole weight of the gate on one side, so it loosens before the line posts do. Fixr lists post repair at $150 to $400 and post replacement at $200 to $500. The new post sits in concrete for 24 to 48 hours before the gate is rehung. For leaning line posts and broken boards elsewhere on the fence, see Fence Repair.

Repair or Replace the Gate?
The frame is sound
New hinges, a latch or a brace is the cheap fix, and it's worth doing first. The wood is rotten at the joints
Screws won't hold in soft wood, so ask for a price on a new gate next to the repair price. Guides put a replacement gate at $200 to $850.The opener is near the end of its life
Guides give automatic gates 10 to 15 years with care, so an old opener that keeps failing is a candidate for replacement. Pricing a new one is covered on Driveway Gates and Gate Openers.Upkeep keeps calls away
Lubricating moving parts every three to six months and keeping the track clear does more for an automatic gate than any single repair.
